Spay & Neuter

Did you know that our Echo Park spay and neuter procedures can improve your pet’s health and happiness, and lead to a longer life? Spaying and neutering can help your pets stave off major illness or disease while also decreasing aggressive behaviors and the need to roam.

Echo Park Veterinary Hospital is pledged to helping end pet overpopulation in our community. We offer low-cost spaying and neutering services to help save innocent animals from being euthanized due to overpopulation. By spaying or neutering your pet, you help your cat or dog, as well as save others from a fate they don’t deserve.

What is Spaying?

Spaying is the surgical removal of ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus of female dogs and cats. By spaying your pet, you help them avoid heat cycles, hormonal anxiety and the desire to mate. Female dogs and cats can be physically mature enough to mate and breed as early as 6 months of age. Veterinary studies show that spaying a female dog or cat while they’re young (before their first heat cycle) greatly reduces your pet’s chance of developing serious health issues like mammary cancer, uterine infections and dangerous pregnancies.

The spaying surgery is routine and painless. During the surgery, a small incision is made in your pet’s abdomen. Reproductive organs are removed and then the incision is stitched back up. Your pet is under anesthesia and will be comfortably sleeping through the entire procedure.

What is Neutering?

Neutering is the process of surgically removing the testicles of male dogs and cats. Unneutered male dogs and cats have the instinct to prowl neighborhoods to mate, mark their territory with urine and often exhibit more aggressive behavior. Neutering your male dog or cat will eliminate these unwanted personality traits that are a danger to the pet, and in some cases to humans. Dogs and cats that have been neutered will be less likely to develop potentially fatal diseases and illnesses such as testicular cancer, prostate disease and infections.

The neutering surgery is simple. A small incision is made in your pet’s scrotal sac and the testicles are removed. Then, the incision is stitched up. Your pet is under anesthesia during the entire procedure and will experience no pain or discomfort.
